Internships
Internships are first steps toward employment after graduation. For English majors, internships may require copyediting or writing, for those are our strengths. We will try to match you with an internship that reflects your interests. Begin your search for an internship with your advisor. Discuss timing, course selection to prepare for an internship, and available internships. Then have a conversation with the Chair or the Associate Chair.
Christine Harrison, at right, interned for Easy Street Magazine in Aiken. "My internship experience taught me so much about myself and where I want my career to go. It was a great opportunity, well worth the effort, and now I have work experience in a 'real world' setting. Internships allow you to gain experience and knowledge you just can’t get in the classroom and a chance at some great references, too!"
Augusta Magazine, Metro Spirit, Easy Street Magazine, the Augusta Chronicle, the Medical College of Georgia, and other non-profit agencies have hosted our interns. Placements change, but the skills required remain fairly constant.
Don’t discount campus experience. English majors write and edit for Sand Hills, Choice Voice, The Bell Ringer, and Phoenix Magazine. The Writing Center and the Literacy Center need tutors every semester, and we are seeking internships with other campus departments.
