English Department
at Augusta State University
An English major is among the most versatile at Augusta State University, training our students to become discriminating readers, independent thinkers, and skillful writers. About one-fourth of our majors plan to become high school English teachers; others will become editors, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, or writers for magazines and newspapers.
English professors at Augusta State are scholar-teachers who introduce students to texts capturing the thoughts of authors in the context of their world and times. Our faculty members are experts in such diverse fields as Chinese poetry, science fiction, women’s writing, Southern literature, post-modern literature, African literature, Irish literature, and medieval literature, and more. Each semester faculty members create new courses listed under “What’s New?” on our website. The diversity of voices will challenge and surprise you. As Virginia Woolf wrote, “Literature is no one’s private ground: Literature is common ground.”
